Cement industry
Introduction:
The rotary kiln system in cement clinker production operates under extremely harsh conditions: ultra-high temperatures (up to 1450–1700°C), strong alkaline corrosion, material abrasion, thermal shock, and chemical attack from alkalis, sulfur, and chlorine compounds. Core equipment includes preheaters, precalciners, rotary kilns (preheating zone, calcining zone, transition zone, burning zone, cooling zone), and grate coolers. Zhengzhou Jinshan Refractory Materials provides highly targeted refractory solutions for different zones of cement kilns, focusing on basic magnesia refractories (such as magnesia-spinel bricks and magnesia-chrome bricks) and high-performance unshaped materials to help customers significantly extend lining life, improve kiln availability, and reduce overall production costs.

1. Preheater & Precalciner System
Working Conditions:
The preheater and precalciner are located at the back end of the kiln for raw meal preheating and carbonate decomposition. Gas temperatures typically range from 800–1100°C. High concentrations of alkali vapors (K₂O, Na₂O) cause severe alkali corrosion and build-up. Dust abrasion and frequent temperature fluctuations are also common. Harmful components such as sulfur and chlorine further intensify chemical attack, leading to lining spalling and structural loosening.
Recommended Refractory Materials and Advantages:
- Alkali-resistant high-alumina bricks or alkali-resistant clay bricks (Al₂O₃ 60–75%): Excellent alkali corrosion resistance and volume stability. Ideal for cyclone tubes, straight pipes, cones, and connecting ducts.
- Lightweight insulating castables and composite insulating layers: Low thermal conductivity, significantly reduce shell temperature (by 60–100°C), minimize heat loss, and improve energy efficiency.
- High-alumina unshaped materials: Fast installation and good abrasion resistance for roofs and high-wear areas.

2. Rotary Kiln Transition Zone (Upper & Lower)
Working Conditions:
The transition zone lies between the calcining and burning zones, with temperatures of 1200–1400°C. Liquid phase begins to form, kiln coating is unstable, and the lining is subjected to strong thermal shock, mechanical stress from kiln shell ovality, and severe attack from alkali, sulfur, and chlorine gases.
Recommended Refractory Materials and Advantages:
- Magnesia-spinel bricks (MgO 78–82%, Al₂O₃ 5–20%): Superior thermal shock resistance and alkali corrosion resistance. Help form a stable coating, reduce spalling, and significantly extend campaign life.
- Direct-bonded magnesia-chrome bricks: Excellent erosion and thermal shock resistance, mainly used in the upper transition zone.
- High-alumina unshaped materials: Convenient for quick local repairs and auxiliary areas.
3. Rotary Kiln Burning / Sintering Zone
Working Conditions:
The burning zone is the hottest area in the cement rotary kiln. Material temperature reaches 1300–1450°C, with flame temperatures exceeding 1700°C. Extremely severe conditions with large amounts of liquid phase, intense chemical corrosion, and repeated formation/shedding of kiln coating.
Recommended Refractory Materials and Advantages:
- Magnesia-spinel bricks or magnesia-hercynite bricks: Excellent thermal shock resistance, superior coating adherence, and strong chemical corrosion resistance. The mainstream choice for modern cement kiln burning zones, forming a thick protective coating.
- Fused or direct-bonded magnesia-chrome bricks: Outstanding high-temperature and slag erosion resistance for heavy-duty conditions.
- Dolomite bricks: Good compatibility with clinker and excellent coating performance — an environmentally friendly alternative.
4. Rotary Kiln Cooling Zone & Grate Cooler
Working Conditions:
The cooling zone experiences rapid temperature drop and strong abrasion from clinker granules. In the grate cooler, the hot zone (bull nose, retaining walls) reaches over 1200°C with intense clinker scouring and alkaline corrosion, while the cold zone mainly suffers mechanical abrasion.
Recommended Refractory Materials and Advantages:
- High-alumina bricks or corundum-based materials: Excellent thermal shock and abrasion resistance for the cooling zone and hot areas of the grate cooler.
- Abrasion-resistant high-alumina silicon carbide castables and precast blocks: Outstanding wear resistance, fast installation, ideal for bull nose, side walls, and roofs.
- Lightweight insulating materials: Used in cold zones to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency.
